There is usually one doll in the house that matters more than the others. It gets carried by an ankle. It gets fed things that are not food. It gets tucked in at night with real ceremony and it comes along on errands whether anyone planned that or not.
At two, a child is not collecting toys. They are choosing a companion.
That is what makes this a harder purchase than it looks. A two year old will love almost any doll you hand them. The question is whether the doll can survive being loved that hard and whether it was built for a child who still puts things in their mouth, still pulls at anything that moves and still needs you to be able to clean it.
Here is what to look for. It holds whether you buy from us or from anyone else.
What actually matters at two
Read the age on the box and know what it means
The age on a doll is not marketing. For dolls sold in the United States it reflects safety testing done for that specific product. Our own age grades are set independently by the testing laboratories, which is why they vary from one line to the next rather than being one number across a catalog. Treat the age as a floor rather than a suggestion. A doll graded for three and up is graded that way for a reason, usually a small part.
Can they carry it themselves
This is the one most people get wrong. A doll that is too big or too heavy stays on the shelf, because a two year old wants to pick it up without asking. Something in the eleven to sixteen inch range usually works. Weight matters as much as height.
Assume it is going in the mouth
Most two year olds still mouth their toys. That is not a phase to design around, it is a fact to buy around. The material matters and so does whether the maker tests the whole doll or just the body.
Check what comes loose
Accessories are where age grading usually turns. A doll can be right for a two year old while the pacifier, bottle or shoes that came with it are meant for older hands. Look at the set, not just the doll. Put the small pieces away until later if you are unsure.
It has to be cleanable
A doll at this age gets into everything. Look for a body you can spot wash and clothing you can machine wash. If a doll cannot be cleaned easily it stops being used, which is a quiet waste of money.
Ask who made it
Plenty of dolls are designed by one company and made by another, which makes it harder to get a straight answer about materials or testing. It is a fair question to ask and a maker who designs and manufactures its own dolls should be able to answer it directly.
Dolls that suit a two year old

The page states this is perfect for toddlers 2 years and older. Realistic facial features, smooth vinyl limbs and a soft cuddly body, with a removable bunny plush that attaches to the doll's clothing with Velcro. The bunny is usually what turns one doll into a whole scene.

The page grades this set for ages 2 and up. Two mini dolls and a pink bathtub with a working pump shower, plus a hooded towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and a duck. Fill the tub and the shower actually sprays, which is the part that keeps children in the game rather than watching.

Graded for ages 2 and up. A 14 inch all vinyl doll with a pink bathtub, pacifier, baby bottle, shampoo and a wipes container. All vinyl means it cleans easily and the arms, legs and head move so it can be dressed and undressed.

Some children are looking for a doll that looks like them. Some parents are looking for a doll that looks like someone their child loves. Both matter and a doll that gets the details right says something a doll that nearly gets them right cannot.
One thing worth knowing across all of it: we do not use magnets in any of our dolls. Magnets raise the age grade and if they are not executed perfectly they can be a hazard, so we design without them.

One they can carry on their own, made of a material that is safe if it goes in their mouth, with no small parts they can pull loose and graded on its own packaging for age two or under. Soft body dolls between eleven and sixteen inches tend to fit a two year old best.
Are dolls good for 2 year olds?
Yes. Two is right in the middle of when pretend play takes off and a doll gives a child someone to feed, carry, comfort and talk to. That is how a lot of early caregiving and language practice happens.
