Most people arrive at this question the same way. You have seen a doll that looks real but still looks cute, you are wondering whether it is a toy or an ornament and you are trying to work out whether the one you are looking at is right for a child.
That is a fair question and the honest answer is that the category holds two quite different things. Some realistic dolls are made for children to play with. Realism comes from the sculpt more than anything else. A doll is a face and a body that somebody carved. Everything downstream, the paint, the hair, the clothing, sits on top of that shape. If the sculpt is generic, no amount of finishing rescues it.
This is where the category quietly divides. Many doll makers work from a small number of faces and build different sets around them, so the same expression reappears across a range under different names. We have taken the other approach. Every JC Toys doll comes from a hand designed original sculpt, from the basic play line through to the deluxe collectibles. We have developed hundreds of unique sculpts over more than thirty years of doing this.
There is a reason we work that way and it is the same reason the realistic doll category exists at all. Collectors took JC Toys original sculpts and customized them, painting and detailing them into lifelike babies. That practice is how the reborn category began. The sculpts were the starting material because they were good enough to build on.
The paint and the finish
Look at skin tone first. Real skin is not one flat color, so a doll that has been finished well carries subtle variation. On higher end pieces that extends to blushing at the knees and knuckles. Painted detail on fingernails and lips does more for realism than any single feature.
The weight and how it sits
A doll that has some weight to it and a body that settles when you hold it reads as real in a way a light hollow one does not. Weighted cloth bodies are common at the collector end. For a child, weight is a trade off, because a doll heavy enough to feel real can be too heavy for a two year old to carry around. The doll that cannot be carried does not get played with.
The materials and whether they were tested
Realism is not worth much if the doll is not safe for the child holding it. Vinyl quality varies and so does how far a maker tests. Ours are tested from the raw material up rather than only at the end. That covers every component, the body, the paint, the hair, the clothing and the fastenings, not just the vinyl. All of our dolls are BPA free and latex free.
Toy or collectible and how to tell
This is the part that saves people money and disappointment, so it is worth being plain about.
A realistic doll made for a child carries an age grade on the box, because it has been safety tested for that age. It is built to be handled, dressed, undressed and cleaned. The materials are chosen to survive that. It is priced as a toy.
A realistic doll made for a collector usually carries an older play age grade, often has a weighted cloth body, sometimes has rooted hair applied by hand and is frequently sold as a limited or one of a kind piece. It is made to be displayed and photographed. It is priced accordingly. It is not intended for a small child.
The quickest test is the age. Our own range shows it clearly. The Bonbebé weighted reborn is graded 2 and up, because it is built to be played with. The Berenguer Classics 17 inch is graded 14 and up as a collectable, because it is made to be kept. Same category, same craft, two very different purchases. The number on the page tells you which is which.
If you are buying for a child, buy from the first group. If you have fallen for something in the second group, that is a perfectly good reason to buy it, just buy it for yourself.

Anatomically correct, all vinyl and small enough for the smallest hands. The page states this doll is made for children ages 2 or older. Real Girl in the name is how you know it is anatomically correct, the same way Real Boy works on the others. At 9.5 inches and under a pound it is the easiest realistic doll here for a young child to carry. The vinyl body spot washes with warm water and mild soap.

Fourteen inches, jointed at the shoulders, hips and neck so the arms, legs and head all move for dressing and undressing. The page describes it as the perfect baby doll for a child age 2 or older. Made in Spain in our own doll factory in Castalla, using baby soft vinyl and Genesis paints, with face sculpts chosen from Salvador Berenguer's fifty year career.
