Most JC Toys dolls clean up with mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth. That is the short answer and it covers the majority of what people need.

How to clean a doll safely
Most vinyl and soft body dolls can be cleaned by hand with mild soap and warm water.
- Remove the clothing and accessories. Most JC Toys dolls have removable outfits that wash separately. Take off hats, pacifiers, bottles and anything else before you start.
- Mix mild soap with warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach and strong cleaners. They damage vinyl and fabric.
- Wash gently by hand. Use a soft cloth or sponge on the face, arms, legs and body. Pay attention to the areas that collect dirt during play.
- Do not fully submerge soft body dolls. Many vinyl dolls are water friendly. Soft body dolls should not go under water unless the product page says they are bath safe.
- Air dry thoroughly. Pat the doll with a towel and let it dry completely before dressing or storing it. Never use a hair dryer or direct heat.
Washing doll clothing
Many JC Toys outfits are machine washable on a gentle cycle, or can be hand washed for extra care. Check the product label, which carries the instructions for that specific doll.
- Use cold or warm water
- Wash delicate clothing separately
- Air dry where possible to help keep the fabric looking right
- Avoid high heat dryers
Keeping doll clothes clean is not only about how the doll looks. Washing, dressing and tidying are part of the caregiving routine children build around a doll, which is where a lot of early nurturing play happens.
When vinyl turns sticky
An older doll that feels tacky to the touch is a common thing and it is not dirt.
Vinyl is made flexible by plasticizers mixed into the material. Over years, faster in heat or direct sunlight, those work their way to the surface. The result is a slightly sticky film that does not wash off with soap because it is coming from inside the vinyl rather than sitting on top of it.
What helps. Wash gently with mild soap and warm water, dry completely, then keep the doll out of heat and out of direct sunlight. A cool, dry spot slows it down considerably.
What does not help. Solvents, alcohol and household cleaners strip the surface and usually make it worse. Talc and powders mask it for a few days and leave residue in the seams.
Storage is the real answer. Dolls kept in a warm attic or a sunny window go sticky far sooner than dolls kept somewhere cool and shaded.
Pink stains and how to avoid them
Pink or rust colored patches that appear on vinyl over time are often called pink mold. It is not usually mold in the way people picture it. It comes from moisture trapped against the vinyl, sometimes with a reaction from dyes in clothing or storage materials.
The important thing is that prevention works and removal often does not. Once the discoloration has set into the vinyl it is difficult to reverse. The aggressive methods people try tend to damage the paint and the finish.
What prevents it:
- Dry the doll completely after any wash, including inside limbs if water has got in
- Store dolls unclothed or in light colored cotton rather than in dark or dyed fabric
- Avoid sealed plastic bags and boxes, which trap moisture against the surface
- Keep dolls out of damp rooms and off cold outside walls
If a doll already has pink discoloration, clean it gently and store it properly from there. Harsh treatments risk losing the paint, which is worse than the stain.
How to take care of a reborn doll
Reborn and hand finished dolls need different handling, because the realism comes from paint applied to the surface. Cleaning them the way you would clean a play doll takes the artwork off.

Cleaning
A soft damp cloth only. No scrubbing and never on painted areas. No solvents, no alcohol, no cleaning wipes.
Water
Do not bathe or submerge a reborn doll. Weighted bodies hold filling that does not dry out and water reaches the paint. Even the vinyl parts should only be wiped.
Hair
Rooted hair is applied strand by strand and it does not regrow. Brush gently with a soft brush, work from the ends upward and do not wash it. If it needs reshaping, a light mist of water and patience is as far as to go.
Clothing
Many reborn dolls fit real newborn clothing, which is part of the appeal. Wash the clothes off the doll, never on it. Avoid dark dyes against light vinyl for long storage.
Storage and handling
Away from extreme heat and prolonged direct sunlight, which fades paint and ages vinyl. Support the head and body when lifting a weighted doll. Kept this way, a reborn doll stays a keepsake for years.
Questions people ask
Can you put a doll in the washing machine?
Some dolls yes, most no. A few of our soft body dolls are machine washable tested and say so on the product label and the product page. Everything else should be surface washed by hand. Never machine wash a doll with hand painted detail, rooted hair or a weighted body. If the label does not say machine washable, treat that as a no.
Why do old dolls get sticky?
Plasticizers, the additives that keep vinyl soft, gradually migrate to the surface as a doll ages. Heat and sunlight speed it up a lot. It is a property of the material rather than a sign the doll is dirty, which is why washing helps only temporarily. Cool, dry, shaded storage is what slows it.
How do you get rid of pink mold on dolls?
Pink discoloration on vinyl is very hard to reverse once it has set. The strong methods people try usually cost you the paint. The practical approach is prevention: dry a doll completely after washing, store it out of sealed plastic, keep it away from damp and avoid dark dyed fabric against light vinyl.
How do you clean a vintage doll?
Gently, less than you think. Start with a dry soft brush to lift dust, then a barely damp cloth on unpainted areas only. Test any moisture somewhere hidden first. Older dolls may have composition, cloth or painted surfaces that water damages permanently. An old doll of real value is worth taking to a doll restorer rather than experimenting on.
How do you restore an old doll?
Cleaning and restoration are different things. Cleaning is surface care and you can do it at home. Restoration means repainting, rerooting hair or repairing limbs, which is skilled work and usually reduces a collectible doll's value if done badly. Clean it, store it properly and get a professional opinion before anything more.
